5 access-points in 1999, 50 in 2000, 1000 in 2001 and 1250 today, a brief historical overview of NOMAD, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, WLAN network.
Coverage and IP mobility were the original design guidelines then came density in the classroom. Voice over Wi-Fi will be our next concern.
It started with WEP, moved to a totally authenticated and encrypted proprietary solution,
is now semi-open (DHCP registered and ARP monitored in the background), looking
for something better but standard and convenient for the community!
This gigantic electromagnetic cloud has generated many creative educational initiatives, and also its fair share of network management challenges.
