I will discuss how European international academic networking has developed from a number of isolated research projects into the powerful unified system that it is today. The repeated interplay between discipline-oriented activities and generic academic computing will be considered. The relationship between the European activities and those in other regions – of course including the US, but also other regions of the world will be traced. The current initiatives for Europe to remain amongst the world leaders, not only in speed of network but also in helping spread the geographic reach will be discussed. Finally, I will consider the role of research and development activities in the furthering both of computing and networking

This presentation is part of session "Opening Plenary Session" which starts at Monday, June 7 @ 14:00
