Network Management has always been an integral component of IP based networks and the Internet. IP network management is still relying on the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) produced in the late 80's. Although SNMP constitutes a very simple solution that enjoys a very large installed base, it is also acknowledged that SNMP has several limitations. The potential of using the extensible Mark-up Language (XML) for network management has instigated several research initiatives. This paper illustrates the benefits of XML management and highlights the most prominent research and industrial efforts, as well as presents a prototype framework enabling XML based management of SNMP-enabled network devices. Most importantly the paper presents recent results on the implementation of the pre-mentioned framework.
