The constant increase of network traffic combined with the demand for versatile services forces rethinking of network architecture. Instead of expensive exchanging or laying down new cables, methods of putting more signals on a single fiber are worth considering. The CWDM technology deployed in the TASK Academic Computer Network in Gdansk, using simple 1x2 optical couplers, OADM and color GBIC modules, has proved to be a cost-effective method of transporting more data and separating services in a metropolitan backbone network.
