Robert (Bob) J. Aiken

Bob is the Director of Cisco’s corporate wide Academic Research and Technologies Initiatives (ARTI) Group at Cisco Systems Inc., Sabillasville, Maryland. ARTI supports university based network research and network infrastructure programs. Bob is co-designer of the National Lambda Rail (NLR). Bob was the network and security research program manager at both the Department of Energy and the National Science foundation and was responsible for DOE and NSF network roles in the High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) and Next Generation Internet (NGI) programs. In the early 1990s, Bob led the engineering team at the NSF which designed the NSF’s vBNS and NAPs which commercialized the Internet in the US, and as an employee of LLNL was a major contributor to the design, development and deployment of DOE’s international network, ESnet. Bob's academic background includes being an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Hood College and an IT manager at Gettysburg College.
