Wednesday 9 June 2004 |
| Time: |
09:00 - 15:30 |
| Location: |
University of the Aegean - Conference Session |
The 6NET project is organising a workshop co-located with the joint TERENA Networking Conference. This will be an open event that anyone may attend. Participants of the conference may attend the workshop as part of their conference registration and need not register separately.
6NET is a large project in the Information Society Technologies programme of the European Union that is deploying a native IPv6 network at Gigabit speeds. It is also developing advanced services and applications that will run on this infrastructure.
The workshop will discuss various aspects of IPv6 deployment and how to make the transition from legacy networks. It will focus on the current state of the technology, with particular reference to multicasting, security and mobility. In addition, it will consider the leading role that 6NET and related projects such as Euro6IX are playing in the development of the next generation of networks.
The 6NET programme is at: www.6net.org/events/workshop-2004/ and is also included in the conference programme.
For people not registered for TNC 2004, there will be a registration fee of € 30 for the workshop.
To register for the workshop (non-participants of TNC) please see: 6register

NRENs offer various services that mostly have emerged in an evolutionary
and techno-driven development process. In the current, more stable
(?)situation it has come time in many NRENs to try to better manage the
service portfolios.
The following aspects will be tackled as well as sketches for future
co-operation:
Portfolio management
- service portfolio of each NREN
- how customer satisfaction is checked
Life-cycle management
- how new services are introduced
- how the estination of the life span is done
- how services are shut down
New product development
- what the role of technical possibilities is, what the role of customer
needs
- what the mechanisms for decision making are
- development project vs. new product launch

Beyond Lightpaths-BoF
Hybrid networks, IP and optical, will have the future. But, what are the
possibilities?
The intention of this BOF-session is to discuss the functionality of a hybrid network: Which types of services can one think of in a network with both IP and Lightpath functionality?
Prior to the discussion there will be a short overview of the proposed SURFnet-6 network. SURFnet 6 will be designed as a hybrid network and will be built starting from Januari 2005.
The speakers panel consists of a mix of people from SURFnet and Nortel Networks:
- Maurice van den Akker - SURFnet Account Advising
- Jan Willem Elion - Nortel Networks
- Dennis Paus - SURFnet Network Management
- Jacques Schuurman - SURFnet Account Advising
